Many people who are looking to create their first website have no idea what they need to get started. A lot of my clients always wonder what setting up a website entails. In this blog posts I decided to list the steps.

Register you domain name

If you want your business name to be in Google Search the first thing you need is to set up a Domain name (e.g yourbusinessname.com.au). All Australian companies with ABN are entitled to com.au status. AU is extremely important if you predominantly have customers in Australia. Most hosting companies help you with this.

Choose a Web Host and Sign Up for an Account

There are hundreds of web hosts with prices ranging $5 to $100 a month. Web hosting is the space that you buy on a remote computer to store your website files.  When you purchase web hosting you are basically renting space on a high-powered server somewhere in the world. Some companies are better than others but most offer packages depending on the size of your site. I usually recommend and Australian host for my clients because the websites hosted on Australian servers run faster.

Designing your Web Pages

Some clients have an exact idea of what content they want on each page. Others are so overwhelmed that they are happy for me to guide them as with experience I know what works and what doesn’t. WordPress can be customised and hence it doesn’t take as long to build on as it would on HTML.

Testing Your Website

You will need to test your web pages as you design them in the major browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 11 and Safari.
